It is unrealistic to expect that Google will make significant dent into the dominance of Symbian, Microsoft, Verizon, Vodafone and others in the short run. However, it is clear that Google's foray is backed by solid thought and a vision. It would be unwise to view Google as a desperate entrant. It is simply that its business model is different; a difference that it has underlined by offering to provide cheaper mobile phones and free Internet access. Already, Microsoft and Symbian have eased the entry barrier for third party application developers on their operating systems. Incumbent leaders need to look beyond tackling Google and reassess the viability of their business models in an era when content and services are King.
