RadioFrame recently released market research that studied how small and medium businesses (SMBs) were using mobile communications, and the demand in that sector for picocells and femtocells. Unsurprisingly, the report, put together by analysts at Qocirca, makes a positive case for enterprise femtocells, finding that over one-third of SMBs complain of problems using cellphones in the office, even though mobile phones are employees' first choice for making calls. The situation is worsening as companies move towards 3G, especially in laptops, and many are reluctant to move to handset 3G plans before coverage and quality are improved.
"The research shows that while interest in new kinds of mobile services is high, good quality voice services and at the right price are what really matters to SMBs today. And with employees increasingly using their mobile devices for a widening range of applications - data, video, even VoIP - the reliability and service quality of mobile communications is going to become increasingly important, particularly with deployment of 3G services, which can find it hard to penetrate buildings," said Mark Keenan, RadioFrame's EMEA general manager. Call costs are also a major issue, and SMBs are attracted to having an affordable tariff within the building, and potentially also within registered users' homes.
