European Parliament looks for unified network

The European Parliament has backed calls by European Commissioner Viviane Reding to create a pan-European wireless broadband service. This would aim to simplify the roll-out across Europe of wireless internet and mobile TV services in the former analog TV spectrum (UHF).

The use of at least part of the UHF band to create a unified system with no interoperability complications has been long discussed, and Reding's preference is for WiMAX to be named the preferred technology for the mobile broadband aspect. Multiple operators would build and run the systems in each country or region, but would have to use the same frequencies, band plans and, in Reding's plan, RAN technology.

However, a statement from the European Parliament only called for some parts of the UHF spectrum to be reserved for the unified network, with other elements left to the national regulators for rule making and auction.
