Analysts bullish on Android, but mainly in the US
Published: 2 October, 2008
A new report from the research firm Strategy Analytics predicts rapid uptake for Android, which it says will gain 4% of the wireless operating system market in its first three months - though only in the US, which of course will be the OS' natural home because Symbian, and smartphones themselves, are less entrenched than in Europe or east Asia.
The report claims that Symbian and Microsoft are losing ground quickly in the US, with Symbian holding about 57% share of the smartphone sector - a full 10 percentage points less than a year earlier - and Microsoft, on 12%, being overtaken by RIM, on 17.4%.
"We expect Android to eventually offer a compelling range of mobile applications, emphasising Google's online assets, such as advertising, mapping and search," report author Chris Ambrosio says.
Longer term, Mobile Linux as a whole is predicted to gain at least 20% of the mobile operating system market by 2013, driven by Android and LiMO, according to ABI. Analyst Stuart Carlaw. Said: "making Linux OS solutions is far more cost effective than incumbent solutions, even when silicon requirements are taken into account, given that a fuller application layer will be included in the standard package. enabling an application domain that embraces web-based applications and blended web and native applications."
