Vodafone is increasing its influence in Africa still further, offering ZAR22.5bn ($2.5bn) to South African incumbent Telkom to gain a majority stake in Vodacom, the two companies's mobile joint venture and the country's largest cellco.
Currently, Vodacom is a 50:50 venture but Vodafone aims to acquire a further 15%. The deal is subject to Telkom disposing of its remaining 35% share in Vodacom through a listing on the JSE Securities Exchange.
A controlling stake would give Vodafone increased power in Vodacom's expanding territory in southern and central Africa, a region seen as a key growth area for the next decade. As well as its home country, the cellco operates in Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Mozambique and Tanzania. Recently, the UK-based operator spent $900m on a 70% stake in Ghana Telecom and new CEO Vittorio Colao has restructured Vodafone's emerging markets business unit to focus on growth in regions such as Central Europe and Africa.
