Browser specialist Opera Software has updated its Opera Mini product, which works on midrange Java-based handsets as well as smartphones, to support video playback, one of the mobile web features in highest demand.
The update also features a new syncing function and a wide range of skins, but the video feature will be most hotly watched, allowing users to get videos via the browser. In fact, it does not provide full support but offers a patch, which still passes users off to the native browser or video player once they click on a video link. However, Opera says that, on Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones at least, Mini will activate the media player when a user clicks a video on a site like YouTube.
In another change, Opera Link gains the ability to sync notes to the Mini browser, sharing up-to-date bookmarks and Speed Dial with any other Opera browser when the user signs in. However, web history is not synced yet.
In addition, Opera has added a server park in the US that will speed performance for Opera Mini in north America and Asia.
