The other three members of the management team are Claire Pedini at human resources, CFO Hubert de Pesquidoux, and Jeong Kim, president of Bell Labs. The last of these is increasingly in the spotlight as Verwaayen seeks to make technology innovation one of ALU's main differentiators, along with services quality and reach.
Verwaayen drew praise for putting together a complex restructuring in short time, sending out decisive messages to the market and focusing on key assets such as the Labs. But his management team is large and its structure smacks of matrix management, which can lack agility, and has been recently dumped by Nortel. Also, while the regional units have attracted two strong new faces, some analysts will be disappointed that there hasn't been a more wholesale injection of new blood.
