3 UK, the smallest UK cellco, is trying to gain its own place in this sector, and has been aggressively repositioning as a broadband operator, creating a sufficiently powerful HSPA network to deliver fixed as well as mobile services, and focusing heavily on dongle-based converged broadband deals, including pay-as-you-go.
It now says it will have 14.4Mbps HSPA available in London and other major metro areas by the third quarter of 2010, and will provide 7.2Mbps connections to 98% of the population by mid-2009. Currently, it covers 95% of the population with 3.6Mbps HSPDA. As well as pushing dongles and the use of wireless for fixed home connections, it is looking to reduce the cost of mobile broadband and appeal to a broader user base, with lower cost and easier to use handsets - including integrated Facebook and Skype phones, made by its sister company INQ, with the former launched in the UK last week.
