As usual, Hutchison 3 is pushing the boundaries of the open mobile model and, as it seeks to position itself as a broadband and quad play operator, it is working with satellite TV giant Sky to boost the appeal of its data packages.
In the UK initially, 3 is offering its customers Sky TV Mobile, as long as they sign up for an internet data package with an additional monthly fee for the television option. This is the first time that Sky Mobile has been made available off-portal and, in fact, although accessed via the cellco's Planet 3 site, the video will actually be delivered via a separate video server.
The Sky TV subscription will cost an extra £5 ($7.50) a month (or £1 a day for casual users), and will also require an internet add-on package if the consumer does not already have this. 3 internet options cost from £2.50 per month for 10Mb of data and these have been a major driver of its recent subscriber growth as it enhances its HSPA coverage and looks to deliver a full quad play over wireless connections.
Sky Mobile services are now available on Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and 3 UK, and it has over 200,000 subscriptions, making it the UK's largest 3G mobile TV service.
David Gibbs, general manager, mobile, BSkyB, said: 'We are excited to launch some of Sky's most popular live mobile TV channels on 3 UK. As we've seen since launching Sky Mobile TV in 2005, month after month Sky content continues to top the mobile channel rankings.'
