Vodafone could ringfence Google's power in Android

While Vodafone is a major ally for Android (though it remains very Symbian focused at the smartphone end), AT&T could do the same favor to the cause of Symbian. The other US carriers are more likely to favor Android, and there is rising speculation that Sprint Nextel will unveil its first Android handset at its Application Developer Conference this week, especially as Google's VP of mobile technology, Rich Miner, is a keynote speaker. Sprint was a founding member of the OHA, though a couple of months ago, its CEO Dan Hesse said in an interview that he did not think Android was good enough yet to carry the Sprint brand. Sprint does work closely with Google, and is the only US major to support it as its default search engine.
