As the handset market becomes hugely pressurized, chipmakers are looking to broaden their revenue streams, and in-car wireless is one area that promises growth even in the dark days of 2009. Accordingly, Qualcomm has announced a collaboration with carmaker Toyota to deliver live television to in-car video displays, using its MediaFLO broadcasting network.
MediaFLO has been adopted by the two leading carriers in the US, where Qualcomm actually owns 700MHz spectrum and runs a mobile TV network as a managed service for operators. However, mobile TV uptake in general is in the very early stages and MediaFLO has had limited impact in other regions where Qualcomm does not have its own networks. However, the chip designer is looking for alternative markets to boost the early stage fortunes of the platform, including broadcasts at live events such as rock concerts, and now in-car entertainment.
The two companies are conducting trials throughout San Diego County and claim to have delivered uninterrupted video transmissions to a Toyota vehicle display connected to a MediaFLO handset.
"We are very pleased to demonstrate how the MediaFLO platform supports diverse broadcast mobile TV services in a host of solutions beyond mobile handsets," said Neville Meijers, general manager of MediaFLO Technologies.
