RIM and Palm both show defiance amid the downturn

For years, there has been speculation that RIM would need to offer its software platform on other handsets in order to retain its mobile email heartland market, and it has indeed signed deals with giants like Nokia - but has continued, against the odds, to thrive in actual devices. However, it does seem to be keeping its options open still and recently released some information about its BlackBerry Application Suite, which allows a Windows Mobile device to run the BlackBerry OS as an application. The suite can be programmed to boot up as soon as Windows Mobile does, and supports BlackBerry email, Messenger, BES synchronization, calendar, tasks, address book and memos. However, the suite cannot access GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and video playback is not supported.
