While such an approach may boost operators' revenues in the short term, they could be shooting themselves in the foot by turning customers off mobile music, or driving them to unlimited services, which are often run by vendors not operators, and so give the carriers a limited share of the revenue. Andrew Bud, chairman of mBlox, said operators need to "rebuild consumer trust". He added: "Consumers need a transparent pricing mechanism to purchase rich content. Content providers need to be sure that their consumers are treated fairly."
The most expensive cost to download a track of an average 2Mb size, £10, was seen in the UK on a pay as you go tariff, though the operator was not identified. On pay as you go deals, French providers charge up to €5 per Mb (about £9 for a 2Mb track). In Germany though, several major service providers offer data, including music downloads, at a more affordable 24 eurocents per Mb (about 45p per track). The cost of downloading a short video of 3-4Mb vary from £1 on the cheapest tariff and a huge £20 on the most expensive tariffs in the UK.
