The US carriers may be leading the charge in terms of commercial deployment of femtocells, but the most advanced trials are mainly in Europe, and Denmark's largest operator, TDC Mobile, is the latest to say it plans to go live this year.
TDC joins Verizon Wireless, Sprint, AT&T, Softbank, Starhub and parts of O2 and Vodafone, in targeting commercial roll-out later in 2009. It is working with UK femtocell specialist Ubiquisys and with NEC, which incorporates the Ubi ZoneGate 3G femto into integrated home devices such as gateways - likely to be the most common way for the tiny indoor base stations to move into European homes, as part of wider fixed/mobile media systems supporting a wide range of applications. By contrast, the US carriers are currently more focused on improved indoor voice coverage and standalone femtos such as the Samsung Airave. The NEC-Ubiquisys partnership also has trials with Orange, Softbank and others.
TDC is conducting a "friendly user trial" with consumers on its 3G network in several regions. CTO Flemming Hynkemejer told MobileToday: "Femtocell technology promises to provide our customers with a number of advantages, primarily improved 3G coverage and capacity indoors. This will give them an even better experience and access to more services ... NEC has a great deal of experience in rolling out similar international femtocell trials, making them the obvious partner for us."
