In theory at least, most major processor makers support all the major mobile OSs, but optimization is important in a world where devices are far from the real openness of the PC world. Symbian, reflecting its Nokia influences, is revolving around traditional cellphone partners - Qualcomm made a splash by announcing support for the platform at Mobile World Congress, but Texas Instruments is determined not to lose entirely its place at Nokia's right hand.
The Symbian Foundation has chosen TI's Zoom OMAP34x-II app processor and mobile development platform, as the reference platform of choice for developing and testing the Symbian OS, as it progresses into its ambitious roll-out of multiple and overlapping releases over the coming two years. Using the Zoom platform, Symbian developers will be able to
validate smartphone and MID applications for Symbian^3, the next release, targeted for the second half of this year.
TI has also announced support for some of the most important cross-platform technologies, Adobe Flash and AIR, which the software house hopes to position as an important harmonizing force on top of the various operating systems. TI has joined the Open Screen Project, which supports these aims, and will optimize Flash and AIR for the OMAP application processor family.
