Wi-Fi shifts from cellco threat to cellco friend premium content

The controversy over the Apple/AT&T decision to disable 3G support in the SlingPlayer Mobile video placeshifting app highlighted the role that Wi-Fi can play in a cellco's strategy, as more phones, like the iPhone, boast dual network support. Once seen as a threat that could steal away valuable megabytes from the carrier's own network, in the era of all-you-can-eat data, Wi-Fi can be an ally, enabling the operator to offload heavy duty traffic from its precious 3G.
