New widgets tools another small sign of Nokia's cross-platform ambitions

Nokia is extending its activities in open source software development and the all-important mobile widgets, introducing a series of new widget plug-in tools. These promise to convert standard web code and scripts, created on PCs, efficiently into mobile apps. While such capabilities can stimulate the influx of thousands of apps to Nokia's Ovi Store, they also point to the early makings of a cross-platform strategy that could take the Finnish handset beyond its own devices, and into a software role that spans the whole mobile web.
