British Telecom has been making increasingly decisive moves recently, to compensate for its lack of a wireless arm since it spun off Celnet (now O2). It already offers fixed/mobile convergence and MVNO services for businesses, plus some domestic services, via a Vodafone partnership and a national network of Wi-Fi hotspots. Its latest move is to sign an exclusive with Samsung for the C6625 handset, marketing this at small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The handset deal is just part of what BT promises will be a new focus on mobile and converged services for SMEs. According to Mobile Today, it is looking for further partnerships around devices and web services, seeking to leverage its 80% share of the fixed line market more effectively in the mobile world.
The C6625 is a Windows Mobile phone and will come with various business focused applications and service options. In February, BT dropped its mobile tariffs by over 30% and bundled in extra services such as free mobile internet, email and unlimited BT-to-BT calls. Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business, told Mobile Today: "BT's partnership with Samsung and Microsoft is an important step in helping us mobilize small businesses."
Samsung UK VP Mark Mitchinson said: 'BT's relationship with more than one million businesses in the UK puts it at the heart of the small business community." Samsung is also keen to increase its business presence and recently announced a dedicated brand for the European enterprise and SME markets.
