One reason for making this hybrid between the N97 and a tablet is to test the emerging MID format waters and showcase a Linux that can challenge Android in the high end; a more practical one is probably to create something tailored for US tastes, and reports say that Nokia has already signed up T-Mobile USA to launch the phone, targeting BlackBerry on the business front and LG on the media-rich side. We would expect Maemo, and in future Maemo/Moblin, to take a more prominent role in Nokia's portfolio in the US than in its other market, since it is, in effect, starting from scratch and has little Symbian presence there. And so far the US carriers have shown more interest in Linux, mainly because of Google's effective Android promotion, than their counterparts elsewhere - though if AT&T follows through on a strategy it has been considering in the past, standardizing on Symbian OS for its midrange web strategy, the picture would certainly change again.
