Meanwhile, Huawei's latest LTE milestone came at T-Mobile Austria, which says it has conducted the world's largest multiuser LTE trial under real world conditions, using the Chinese firm's equipment. Using 60 base stations, the cellco says the test network has been running for a month and is mainly there to feedback from consumers. The trial network is the largest in Europe so far and runs on existing 3G infrastructure in the city of Innsbruck.
Rival 3 Austria responded by promising to deploy LTE throughout its network, though not starting until 2011. Before that, it plans to upgrade its 21Mbps HSPA+ network to 42Mbps peak download speeds using MIMO antennas. It will rely on Nokia Siemens for both networks and to upgrade its backhaul system. T-Mobile Europe has been aggressive about LTE timelines, in contrast to most of its rivals in the region, and wants to skip over MIMO-enabled HSPA+. It wants to deploy LTE in Austria from 2010 and is petitioning the country's regulator to make 2.6GHz spectrum available quickly to support new networks.
