As operator trials of LTE mount up, Nokia has introduced its first modem for the standard, aiming to grab a place in some of test deployments.
The Nokia Internet Modem RD-3 is being made available to vendors, measurement equipment makers and operators, and supports interoperability with GSM/EDGE and W-CDMA/HSPA as well as multiple LTE frequency bands. It claims maximum download rates of 160Mbps.
"Nokia is committed to supporting industry activities aimed at maturing LTE technology to enable the first commercial networks to launch in 2010," said Jani Mäenpää, project manager for LTE/SAE interoperability and trials at Nokia.
The device was unveiled only a week after Samsung announced its own LTE modem. Branded the Kalmia, this supports download speeds of up to 100Mbps and upload speeds of 50Mbps within a 20MHz channel. Samsung also announced a 3G baseband modem based on the Release 7 HSPA Evolution platform. This modem, branded the Broom, allows download speeds of up to 28Mbps and upload speeds of 11.5Mbps.
Mäenpää's blog posting continued: "Nokia is also a founding member in the LTE/SAE Trial Initiative (LSTI) and carries out interoperability testing with a number of network vendors, collaborates with measurement equipment manufacturers and is ready to support operators with their LTE deployment activities. The Nokia Internet Modem RD-3 is used in all these activities."
Before the advent of these modems, triallists had to use cabinet-sized equipment to provide modem functionality. Last December, LG announced the first chipset for an LTE USB terminal.
