In more news from Clearwire, the operator says it has completed its 'innovation network' in Silicon Valley, announced earlier this year as a sandbox for developers looking to create applications that take advantage of mobile broadband. The network, created with investor Google and key supplier Cisco, covers more than 20 square miles in Santa Clara, Mountain View (Google's home) and parts of Palo Alto. The Intel campus in the Valley is also covered, and Cisco's will be soon.
As Om Malik comments on GigaOm, the network is needed as it "exposes app developers to the potential of true wireless broadband that is much faster than current broadband networks. That is the only way they can create new apps for this bandwidth rich network".
Service will be provided free to a limited number of qualified developers leading up to the commercial service launch in this area. Developers can buy a Clearwire USB modem for $49.99 to access the network.
