Although its merger plan with South Africa's MTN has fallen through, Bharti is still seeking higher value markets abroad, and is also looking to improve its profitability via enterprise services, supporting India's huge number of SMBs. Yesterday it announced a partnership with Cisco with this market in mind, working with Cisco kit to offer services such as business data, hosted unified communication, and teleconferencing, to companies of all sizes.
Also in India, Telenor subsidiary Unitech Wireless has chosen Nokia Siemens as its
exclusive supplier for its national GPRS core network, and NSN will also manage the day-to-day operations of the network, under the brand Uninor, for three years. Unitech has spectrum in 22 circles and will go live in some areas by year end. Telenor is seeing strong growth in India and aims to build on its new truce with VimpelCom of Russia to extend its reach further into emerging markets.
Telenor and Russian conglomerate Altimo (Alfa Group) finally ended years of legal disputes this week with a plan to combine their common assets in Russia and Ukraine. They will merge their holdings in Russia's second cellco, VimpelCom, and Ukrainian player Kyivstar, into a new jointly owned mobile operator, VimpelCom Ltd. The JV will provide services in Russia, Ukraine and other CIS countries, as well as Georgia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. As a result, the operators have agreed to suspend all their ongoing legal proceedings and take action to withdraw or settle them prior to the transaction being completed.
Jon Fredrik Baksaas, Telenor's CEO, expects the new JV to be an important player in emerging markets, saying in an interview that the investment horizon in emerging markets is now shorter than it used to be in the past.
