Over at Android, the phonemakers breathed a sigh of relief earlier in the week when Android 2.0 finally appeared, supporting a wave of enhanced capabilities in multimedia, touch and services. Now the group that supports Android, the Open Handset Alliance, along with the Android Open Source Project, have shown off developments that extend the OS' reach to new devices.
The latest software developer kit already supports CDMA, QVGA screen sizes, gesture APIs, a text-to-speech engine and a quick search box that can integrate Google Search services within any app. A more experimental feature from Google Labs also promises a new browsing experience, Fast Flip, which allows users to 'flip' left and right through news headlines and feeds, while tapping the screen for a summary of the page and zooming to see the content in greater detail.
As Motorola unleashes its Android 2.0 device, Droid, and Sony Ericsson readies Xperia X10, LG is also unveiling its first Android smartphone, the LG-GW620. This features a three-inch, full touchscreen and slide-out Qwerty keypad, with a focus on email and social networking services. It will launch in Europe later this month.
