Some of the One Voice supporters are already involved in VoLGA (though its major carrier T-Mobile has not yet joined the new group). Steve Shaw, who heads up corporate marketing for Kineto and VoLGA, believes that IMS is the way that, ultimately, voice will be handled, but it has a long way to go before it is usable, and so there will still be a role for several years for approaches like VoLGA.
He commented in a statement: "First, Kineto is supportive of One Voice. The One Voice goal is to define a common set of capabilities and parameters to simplify IMS telephony. No one argues that IMS has become unwieldy to the point it's nearly impossible to understand even where to begin. This initiative had to be undertaken for IMS's sake. I think the document the One Voice group published today is the first step in a long process of 'unwinding' IMS down to something workable."
He added: "Many operators may not be prepared for the financial and operation commitments of IMS in the short term. IMS telephony is more than a new box to make phone calls, it is a realignment of operational and business support systems. It's a major undertaking."
