Samsung is expected to see 1.3% growth for this year, mainly because of its dominance of the memory market, which outperformed the overall chip industry - its leadership in DRAM and NAND Flash memories helped it keep its number two position after Intel. Qualcomm is predicted to report flat revenues, making it the second best performer in the top 10 after Samsung, mainly because it stole significant market share in cellphone chips from rivals.
Infineon dropped out of the top 10 because of its spin-off of its Lantiq wireline chip unit. Outside the premier league, MediaTek of Taiwan is expected to post the best performance in the top 20, with an increase of 21.7% based on the strong growth of its largest market, Chinese cellphones. Freescale, by contrast, will suffer the worst drop in rankings in the top 20, from 13th to 17th, mainly because of its exit from the handset chip sector.
Wireless communications was the most resilient segment for semiconductors, with a forecast decline of just 8.2%, and regionally, Asia-Pacific was most robust, and Europe weakest.
