Dominic Lobo, Orange's head of App Shop, said the unique selling point was that all apps would be compatible with different OSs. "We will be working with some developers to have exclusive content made available for our customers, but the main point of difference for us is that the applications are available to any of our customers using a range of different operating systems," he said.
Christophe Francois, director of multimedia at Orange, told Techworld: "Not all customers are as advanced as the early adopters of Android ... most of them don't need to see 140 weather forecast applications in the application shop. They just need a couple of good ones."
Following in the footsteps of Vodafone's new 360 mobile web service, which relies heavily on integrated social networking and contact functions in its user interface, Orange said it was testing a beta version of a contact aggregator, which combines details from social nets, email accounts and phone books. The ON service will allow users to update their status and support unified messaging, as well as prioritizing the way that incoming calls from different people or groups are handled. The beta app can be downloaded now, initially on Android only.
