The increasingly advanced graphics and multimedia functionality expected in smartphones is opening up new mobile opportunities for chipmakers from other markets, such as Nvidia, and Broadcom sees multimedia processors as a way to improve its position in the cellphone. Its latest product in this area is the BCM2763 VideoCore IV which boasts 1080p video, 20-megapixel images and gigapixel graphics, all running at low power because of the firm's new 40nm process.

The shift to 40nm CMOS process technology is enabling chipmakers to reduce the footprint and power consumption of their products, and to integrate more elements. The elements in Broadcom's new device are certainly impressive, and will enable smartphone vendors to include HD video recording and playback, cameras of up to 20-megapixels (the top camera on the market is currently 12.5-mp), and 1 gigapixel 2D/3D graphics rendering for applications such as games. The HD video, high resolution images and 3D games can also be

Broadcom says the VideoCore IV achieves power reduction of 20% to 50% compared to the previous generation, VideoCore III. It supports 4-6 hours of 1080p video recording, 8-10 hours of mobile playback, and up to 16 hours of HD playback over HDMI (as long as the phone has sufficient storage of course).

The BCM2763 integrates the functions of eight chips including GPU and graphics memory, image signal processor and ISP memory, video processor and video memory, HDMI, and USB 2.0. Also, 128Mb of LPDDR2 graphics memory is included.
