Amdocs attacks Telco 2.0 with new unified carrier platform
Published: 20 January, 2010
Amdocs, long known as a large but hardly dynamic back office systems supplier, is going through a transformation. Last year it made a major push behind its expansion into media and advertising platforms and services. Now it is targeting its customers' moves into 'Telco 2.0', where web services are enhanced by leveraging the capabilities of the carrier's network and customer data. It has revamped its whole product portfolio to support operators in delivering these highly personalized offerings, releasing the CES 8 suite.
This update puts solid products behind Amdocs' key themes of 2009, such as helping carriers gear up to support "a trillion connected devices". It also brings together various new initiatives and acquisitions that the firm has made in the past couple of years, particularly in hot carrier areas like personalization and service delivery platforms for wired and wireless IP systems.
CES 8 integrates products from many areas of the Amdocs range, including customer support, billing, network operations and service delivery. All these disparate elements are now based on a common product architecture and a unified labelling scheme. Among the acquisitions whose products are now fully integrated are JNetX' application server. This delivers services to new IP devices and networks but also supports legacy systems.
Other product updates in CES 8 are a new mobile backhaul capacity management offering for LTE and WiMAX; and enhanced personalization and ecommerce portal capabilities, many derived from the acquisition of ChangingWorlds. Tapping into the carrier craze for app stores, Amdocs is offering a universal storefront platform on which they can build their own-branded shopfronts with reduced cost and risk. Updates to the most traditional product lines are also in evidence, such as additions to the Amdocs Convergent Charging platform, to support greater flexibility in mixing prepaid and postpaid contracts and billing.
