So what of general predictions for the tablet? To sum up, they mainly revolve around a 10-inch multitouch display, with an ultraslim format and a single button. Also including a front-facing webcam for iChat videoconferencing; integrated content platform for books, newspapers and video (probably with News Corp and Disney signed up from day one); combined dock and keyboard; and new OS X-based user interface with heavy nods to the iPhone OS. Price tag around $899 with Wi-Fi or $999 with 3G as well.
Some interesting possibilities - the tablet will contain an app processor designed inhouse by Apple using its PA Semi acquisition, but made by Samsung. It will come with embedded 3G rather than a carrier contract/subsidy, like Kindle. It will have a multimode option, allowing users to switch between an e-ink display and a conventional touchscreen. It could have a new input mechanism that allows touch typing without a stylus. It may well be positioned as a media hub as well as personal device, with advanced features for sharing media and household messages.
And the rumors that won't come true, in our opinion? An LTE option in time for Verizon's launch this year (suitable chips won't be available). An OLED screen in the first iteration (Apple is said to be stockpiling OLEDs, but a display as large as 10-inches is not standard issue from any vendor, and there are no reports of any device maker placing a special order). A 3D display (nice idea on the basis of the Avatar buzz, but it would be expensive and require glasses).
