Reaction to the launch was mixed. Book publishers and Apple fanatics went wild, and some even bought into Jobs' claim to be introducing a whole new category of computer, fitting between the PC and the phone (well, actually we have to give Microsoft credit for that, unless you count Apple's own Newton tablet; or more recently the smartbook brigade). Others felt this was an interesting and attractive device from a company trying to ride on the massive wave of iPhone popularity, rather than seeking to shift the rules of the game, either in software model or hardware (a CDMA version for Verizon was just "too difficult and time consuming" for a first phase launch, said an insider). That may well be a very sensible strategy from Apple, whose recent results show a company at the top of its game. It's just rather a letdown for those looking for something brand new and game-changing out of yesterday's launch.
