"Everyone knows Samsung is behind the market on smartphones but the benefit to that is we can start from the high end to grow our share," said Robert Yi, chief of investor relations.
Samsung shipped 68.8m units in the fourth quarter, up 31% year-on-year and 14% on the previous period. For the full year, the vendor shipped 227m units, a 16% increase on 2008. Average selling price was down though, as Samsung gained share by expanding in developing economies. ASP fell by 4% on Q309, to $115.
For the full year, Samsung said it earned KRW9.7 trillion, or ($8.6bn), up from KRW5.5 trillion in 2008, and the highest annual profit since 2004. Sales were a record, up 23% to KRW89.8 trillion.
According to Strategy Analytics, cellphone sales in 2009 fell by 4% to 1.3bn, a huge improvement on some of the dire predictions issued this time last year, when some analysts were even warning of a shortfall of 25% or 30% amid the global recession. In the fourth quarter, shipments were up 10% year-on-year to 324.4m units, the first period of growth since the third quarter of 2008. While Strategy Analytics did not give a forecast for 2010, it expects first quarter shipments to rise to 265m from 244.5m a year earlier.
"Consumers, operators and handset vendors are steadily regaining confidence. However, some major regions, such as South America, are still a little fragile, so it will not always be a smooth recovery and some regions will fare better than others," said Neil Mawston, director of global wireless practise, in a statement.
