This year's MWC may be less about handsets than usual, but there are still plenty on display, with Sony Ericsson finally debuting the Android -based Xperia X10, and Samsung unleashing Wave, its first smartphone to run its new bada software platform.

Both handset vendors held MWC-eve parties to welcome their new handsets, with Samsung's featuring an aerial ballet. Wave sports a 3.3-inch touchscreen with super-AMOLED technology, confirming Samsung's lead in this bright display system.

Also right on trend is Social Hub, which like Motorola's Motoblur and many others, integrates email, instant messaging and many social nets across all major portals, into a single homescreen interface.

Wave also features the third version of Samsung's TouchWiz user interface, integrating messaging, contacts and calendar events. Although theoretically usable with any operating system, bada is initially tightly bound in with TouchWiz and Samsung's own platform - creating an open developer ecosystem without actually adopting an open OS (though Samsung will step up its Android and Symbian efforts this year too).

Bada provides developers with flash control, web control, motion sensing, vibration control and face detection tools, plus support for context-aware applications incorporating accelerometers, tilt, weather, proximity and activity sensors. Bada apps can integrate with device functions to make phone calls, send messages or access the contact list.

"Samsung is committed to making the smartphone era available for everyone, regardless of cost, need, lifestyle or geographic location," said JK Shin, head of the firm's Mobile Communications division.

Samsung also said that its Samsung Apps marketplace, already live in the UK, France, Italy, Singapore, Germany, Brazil and China, will expand to more than 50 countries over the course of 2010.
