Telefonica, the third largest telco in the world, is increasingly exerting its influence to create a strong mobile web platform that bears its brand, and is suited to midrange and low end handsets. It has signed far reaching alliances with several software houses that target the mass market, notably Opera for its Mini browser, and has now added Myriad Group, whose Java and social networking technologies are heavily focused on bringing a full mobile internet experience even to those with slower connections or basic handsets.

This is vital to a large part of Telefonica's base across Latin America, and it has signed a five-year strategic partnership for the region, covering 80m customers in 12 countries. It will market a range of Myriad designed services, oriented to social networking, under its

The Myriad products, acquired with social specialist Xumii, will enable users to access multiple social nets at the same time via their browsers, and access downloadable apps. This is part of a program announced by Telefonica over a year ago, to create a rich mobile social experience, integrating key programs like Facebook, but with its own brand as the key unifying factor.

"Latin American consumers are enthusiastic users of social networks. This agreement will bring them a compelling and affordable way to access these sites from their mobile phones," said Luis Miguel Gilperez Lopez, head of Telefonica Latin America's mobile division. "One of the most appealing aspects of Myriad is its focus on mass market phones rather than just high end devices."

The countries included are Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Myriad also recently announced a Xumii deal with Optus of Australia.
