Intel, ARM and MIPS all seek dominance in the fluid world of emerging device formats

The device processor world used to be simple. Intel x86 ruled PCs and recently netbooks; ARM dominated phones and was expanding into other mobile gadgets; Mips was strong in broadband and home media equipment. Now, wireless is becoming fundamental to all three markets and all three want a piece of each others' key sectors. They all also aim to gain a strong foothold in two important emerging segments - hybrid PC/phone platforms like tablets and smartbooks; and the rapidly growing range of low power products with embedded wireless, from sensors to low end consumer electronics.
