Another initiative focused on HD content networks has been WHDI (Wireless Home Digital Interface), whose chip pioneer is Amimon. Its technology is loosely based on Wi-Fi, using smart antennas but in the 5GHz band. The firm says it has now amassed over 500,000 orders for its chipsets and aims to cross the one million mark by year end, with the holiday season providing a fillip for sales of wireless HDTV sets. Manufacturers including Asus, LG, Mitsubishi, Philips, Sharp and Sony have created products ranging from HDTVs with wireless connectivity to PC-TV adapters, HD video switches, video cameras and medical device equipment using Amimon chips.
Last year the firm shifted its efforts towards closer integration with Wi-Fi, sparked by Sony's decision to support WirelessHD as its main standard in TVs. Its change of direction saw WHDI coming closer to Wi-Fi, with less chance of succeeding as a standard in its own right. The vision is that OEMs will get WHDI by default when they purchase Wi-Fi chips, and Amimon is also building up its IPR licensing business, and targeting future releases at PCs and even, eventually, handsets.
