The major equipment vendors are stepping up their efforts to get TD-LTE kit to market, with China Mobile planning to initiate live services as early as next year and interest in India and elsewhere. Ericsson has demonstrated an end-to-end TD-LTE system at an event in Shanghai organized by China Mobile.
Motorola and Alcatel-Lucent have already built a TD-LTE showcase network for China Mobile at the Shanghai World Expo, using data devices built on Sequans' mobile chips, Ericsson - which contributed heavily to the TDD version of the LTE standard, seeking to create an alternative to WiMAX in unpaired spectrum - was using device silicon from its own joint venture, ST-Ericsson. STE has also been building close ties with China Mobile via its Chinese subsidiary in the past year.
The demonstration showcased applications such as video on demand and video streaming using a live camera. The next phase will be to carry out interoperability testing with dongles based on other chip technology.
Ericsson said it planned to introduce a software defined base station in its RBS6000 family, which will also have a forward migration path to the future LTE-Advanced standard. STE will launch its modem commercially next year, supporting both LTE flavors plus TD-SCDMA and HSPA+/EDGE.
