It's been discovered that RIM has registered the domain blackpad.com, lending some credence to the myth of the BlackBerry tablet which has for a longtime been dubbed the "BlackPad". While the name may sound like a bad joke, worse even than the "iPad", there's no question that RIM acquired the domain just a few days ago. It was originally registered in 2002, and has since been transferred to various owners, until falling into RIM's hands.
The project may be unofficial and unannounced but there is some evidence to back up claims that RIM is working on a tablet. Most recently it was reported that RIM has ordered 8.9 inch touchscreens from electronics manufacturer Hon Hai and it's also been noted that OS 6.0 has many features aimed at touchscreen devices.
The registered domain is no guarantee that the BlackPad exists and could be a preventative measure in case RIM does decide on a tablet and give it the awful name. Examples of this in the past include Apple registering the iPhone.org domain several years before the device was officially announced.
RIM has denied plans of working on a tablet but it begs the question of what they are going to be using the 8.9 inch screens for. The BlackPad is just one name for the rumoured tablet which is also known as "Cobalt". Rumours earlier this year stated that the Cobalt would have an 8.9 inch screen, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. It is also rumoured to feature a 1GHz processor and to be thinner than the iPad.
While the BlackPad name is a logical contraction of brand and product name, Cobalt would undoubtedly be the butt of less jokes though the cobalt.com domain is already taken. With other companies such Motorola, Samsung and Acer scrambling to enter the tablet market, a similar move from BlackBerry would be unsurprising.
