Invites to a press conference have been leaked which suggest that the Samsung Galaxy Tablet, also known as the Galaxy Tab, will be launched August 11. The invitation posted on Crunchgear mentions new products and announcements that will be revealed and invites the recipient to join Samsung in a "new dimension of wonder". The invite seems to confirm news that Samsung's tablet will launch in Q3, likely hitting stores by the end of September.
The Galaxy Tablet looks like it's going to be a larger version of the Galaxy smartphone and users might even be able to make calls from it, unlike the iPad. Rumoured specs so far include a 7" AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, either a 1GHz A8 or 1.2GHz Samsung Humming Bird processor, 16GB of internal storage expandable to 32GB via a MicroSD Card slot and Android 2.2. It's also said to feature a 3.2mp camera with a front facing VGA camera for video calling.
Compared to the Galaxy S smartphone the specs seem similar, with a 1GHz processor and 16GB of internal memory, though the Galaxy S has a 5mp camera. With the iPad and other rumoured tablets which have similar specs to their smartphone predecessors this seems to suggest the rumours are accurate, and if it's true that calls can be made from the Samsung Tablet then it could give it the edge over the iPad.
Also expected to be announced at the event and in a kind of backwards move compared to Apple is the Samsung YP-MB2 - basically a Samsung iPod touch, a Galaxy S without the ability to make phone calls. The YP-MB2 would be similarly spec'd and would also have a 1GHz processor and 3mp camera.
The event takes place just over a week from now, Wednesday August 11 at the Time Warner Center in New York and will be presented by Tim Baxter, president of Samsung America.
