Further analyst figures indicate powerful growth for Android, with iSuppli projecting that the Google OS will overtake Apple iOS in global installed base by 2012. This would see Android powering 75m handsets by that year, compared to Apple's 62m, equating to 19.4% and 15.9% market share respectively.
Since May, Android phones have doubled their activation rate to 200,000 per day, with Google CEO Eric Schmidt giving particular credit to the strong US smartphone market (one where Nokia is barely relevant), and to a few recent new models - HTC EVO, Droid X and Samsung Galaxy S.
Of course, the comparison is between a single handset family and an OS supported by many vendors. But it helps to justify Google's belief in a multivendor, open platform and that system will now move into a host of non-phone devices from tablets to media players. LG, Acer and Asus are likely to hit the market first with Android tablets.
"Android is taking the smartphone market by storm," said Tina Teng, senior analyst, wireless communications, for iSuppli, in a statement.
