Orange pioneers single contract, single bill Quad play

cellular voice, fixed voice, broadband and TV which start as low as €54.90 a month

Orange in France was finally permitted last month to offer a full quad play bundle by its local regulator and has come out with a series of offers which include all four services - cellular voice, fixed voice, broadband and TV - which start as low as €54.90 a month.

The change to the ruling in France could easily change the landscape there, as Orange is a dominant supplier in both fixed and mobile and has made huge investments into both TV infrastructure and content recently, including control of French soccer games.

If the Quad play bundles drag customers back to Orange from rivals then it is likely to become a blueprint for introducing Quad play around Europe. Most incumbents across Europe have had huge problems with Quad play, ranging from being unable to consolidate help centres across four services, to not having a cellular infrastructure, in the case of British Telecom. Another problem has been lengthy customer data integration across the four services.

The new offers will go live from August 19 in France and will be tied to a single contract, a single bill, and a single customer service operation. Only about five other operators around the world have managed to get such a tightly integrated quad offering as that.

It will be sold under the brand of Orange Open, and the first level comes with a single hour of mobile voice minutes plus free fixed line calls during the evening and unlimited calls to a handful of mobiles at all times. Then 2 hours and 3 hours of cellular voice time and finally unlimited calls all over France whatever the time of day. They all come with Orange TV with 100 channels, 20 Mbps Broadband and VoIP based home voice. The most expensive offer will be €109.90.

The offering also comes with the promise of a replacement device in the event of a breakdown, whether it is a set top, a phone or a VoIP Livebox to be delivered within 48 hours.

All of the packages offer 1GB a month of data and free SMS and WiFi access. Virgin in the UK is one of the only other operators in Europe with a full quad play service.
