The Samsung Galaxy S series is celebrating its one millionth handset shipped in the US, another victory for Android smartphones which are becoming an increasingly dominant force in the marketplace.
Launched July 15, it is quite an impressive milestone to reach for the Android devices, even if it does pale in comparison to the 8.4 million iPhones sold from April to June. One advantage the Galaxy S series has is being available from all the major US carriers with the Vibrant on T-Mobile, Captivate on AT&T and the Epic 4G with Sprint. In addition to these, Verizon will be soon selling the Fascinate.
The Galaxy S is an impressive quartet of smartphones which feature a 1GHz processor with a large 4" super AMOLED screen and social networking features. It ships with Android 2.1, which will be upgradeable to the latest 2.2 release in the future. Its success could be attributed to a number of factors; all the major carriers have one; an aggressive advertising campaign which spans all media; or that they're just great phones.
The recently released Samsung Android device, the Epic 4G on Sprint, went on pre-sale on the weekend and has already proved popular. A visit to the pre-order page reveals a greyed out "Buy Online" button with the caption "Sales have already been Epic, all pre-sale inventory has sold out". This could indicate an Samsung snowball which is about to gather momentum though it still have some way to go before catching up with Apple's success.
Also, it looks like there's a new Galaxy S handset just around the corner. Invites have been sent out to an event on September 16 where an "Android powered device" and Samsung's social media hub will be revealed.
