Back in July a mystery device cropped up on T-Mobile's website, teasing to be its first HSPA+ handset. The blank place holder had a lot of people guessing, and an investigation of the page's source code suggested that it could be the G1 aka Vanguard aka HTC Vision. Now things become a little clearer with some internal specs to boot as the phone has been revealed to be the G2. It will be their first device to run at "4G speeds" on T-Mobile's HSPA+ network and while the place holder on the teaser page is still blank, pictures have been leaked of the device.
Boasting superfast HSPA+ speeds it looks like it could be a fast phone for internet browsing but the hardware tells a different story. Yes it will run Android 2.2 but it will be powered by a disappointing 800Mhz processor. Promising to continue a revolution that the G1 started it seems that its might well be down to its internet speeds rather than its processing power. Leaked pictures show this to be a device which bears little resemblance to the original G1, a good thing, with a slideout QWERTY which is the full length of device.
It would have been nice to see this with a 1GHz CPU, but it's still an improvement on the original G1 which came with a 528MHz processor. Released nearly two years ago the G1 wasn't bad for its time with 192MB of RAM, and a 3.2" touchscreen with a 320x480 resolution.
Unlike other manufacturers the device will ship with a standard Android install which should help performance, rather than a customised version which could slow things down.
T-Mobile claim it will be the fastest smartphone in America, though it seems that will be down to what speed mobile broadband they can deliver rather than its technical prowess. There's no word yet on a release date but it is expected to be released with a price tag below $200.
