To bolster its manoeuvres into the smartphone market ZTE is following in the footsteps of virtually every other handset OEM and launching a tablet device. In an interview last week, He Shiyou confirmed that the Chinese giant is developing an Android-powered tablet scheduled for release later this year in Europe, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region. The device, internally called the V9, will have a seven-inch screen and both a touchscreen and a keyboard.
At 28 million units shipped in the first half, ZTE is now biting at the heels of Apple, Sony Ericsson. In the final quarter of 2009, ZTE managed to Motorola as the number five phone seller. It may not be long before another Western manufacturer is demoted in the top rankings, replaced by the Asian upstart.
