T-Mobile has chosen Facebook as the place to make its upcoming G2 handset official, announcing that it will be available for pre-order later this month. Last week the specs were revealed for the mystery handset, and while the folks at T-Mobile are keen to market the phone as having "4G Speeds" it should be noted that the phone is in fact just HSPA+ or 3.5G, not 4G. Like its G1 predecessor, the G2 is Google branded meaning there will be close integration with Google services.
Running Android 2.2 the claim's of fast internet speeds belie the slightly underpowered 800MHz processor under the hood, although it's said to be optimised for performance and battery life. It will also feature a 5mp camera which can record 720p HD video and has an LED flash and autofocus. Slightly lacking in the built-in memory department the G2 only has 4GB and ships with an 8GB Micro SD card, which of course can expanded to 32GB.
Despite a few minor shortcomings, and T-Mobile's keenness to make people believe this is a 4G phone, it does offer some promising features, like a unique hinge design and some key Google Apps. In addition to Google Voice and Google Goggles the phone will also run voice searches using Google Voice Actions. More common Google apps that are pre-loaded include Gmail, Google Earth and Google Maps.
"With today's announcement of the G2, HTC and T-Mobile are once again bringing a breakthrough Android product to market" says Peter Chou from HTC.

There's no release date confirmed for the handset yet, all T-Mobile is revealing is that pre-orders will start being taken at the end of the month.
Oh, and if you want to take advantage of those 4G speeds which aren't really 4G you'll have to be living in one of the 55 cities it is availalble in, which equates to coverage for about 100 millions US users.
