As D-Day approaches for the launch of Windows Phone 7 some nice clear press pictures have been leaked for LGs Optimus 7. One of the first manufacturers to get in on the Windows Phone 7 action, LG is hoping to make a name for itself in the smartphone market with a series of handsets running Android and the new platform from Microsoft. While the photos don't tell us anything we don't already know, they show a smart looking device from LG which should sit well alongside its stablemates.

Little is known about the internal hardware of the device but the pictures confirm it will have a 5mp camera. It is expected to have a 1GHz processor and a 3.5" display which is slightly on the small side compared to other high-end handsets. While it doesn't look like the Optimus 7 will be boasting a dual-core chip it is possible that a handset from the manufacturer featuring the promised Tegra 2 chip running Windows Phone 7 could be available before 2011.

Recent leaks surrounding the phone seemed to originate in Germany where the device was spotted on Amazon.de for €499 ($691). The product page has since been removed.

Windows Phone 7 is a marked improvement on its predecessors and could quickly catch up with its Android and iOS rivals. The design of the UI shows a new humanising take on the smartphone experience aimed at delivering information faster so users can get back to their lives. The simple primary-coloured layout is certainly appealing and focuses on simplifying the way users interact with their devices.

With its own marketplace and Xbox LIVE integration, Windows Phone 7 will automatically turn any phone it's on into a gaming device to rival similar handsets and even portable gaming consoles. With phones like the Optimus 7 becoming as capable as their desktop counterparts, smartphone preference will soon become more like the old Mac vs PC debate.

The pictures come from an anonymous source but there is no reason to doubt that they are genuine.

Windows Phone 7 is launching in New York on Monday but a full list of devices that are being released with the platform are not known, although handsets from Samsung and HTC are definitely on their way. Steve Ballmer also let it slip that Microsoft is planning to release tablets before the year's end.

There's plenty of hopes resting on how well the new OS will perform and Monday's event is going to be a landmark date for the future of Microsoft's smartphones, whatever it may hold.
