The ITU Telecom World event returned to Geneva this week, and its themes were clearly affected by the twin trends of global recession and exploding broadband. Stimulus funds and regeneration plans mean these two phenomena are tightly linked, and the use of universal broadband to aid recovery is accelerating the move to using wireless for high speed access in many regions. The lower costs and risks of wireless build-out will, in turn, speed the connection of the 'next billion' and even this year, mobile subscriptions will rise by 15% to 4.6bn worldwide, says the ITU. Other key themes - Asia becoming the powerhouse of wireless innovation; the rising interest in green initiatives; and the emergence of Africa.
