LG working on 8.9" Honeycomb tablet

A number of sources have revealed this week that LG will definitely be releasing a tablet in the new year, though the company will be waiting for Android 3.5 'Honeycomb' rather than the soon to be released Gingerbread build.

The Korean manufacturer abandoned tablet plans earlier this year after deciding that Android 2.2 just wasn't going to cut it on its device. Instead of rushing out a tablet with the current build, like many are doing for the holiday season, or settling for Android 3.0, LG has decided go for Honeycomb which might not be as long a wait as some thought it would.

Little is known about LG's tablet but as expected it will feature a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, and a large 8.9" screen has also been confirmed. This would make it more competitive with the iPad than say the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which has a single core processor, runs Android 2.2 and falls into the 7" category that has been criticised by Steve Jobs for being too small to be useful.

"While the existing tablet PCs focus on e-book, movie, music and the Internet functions, LG's new tablet PC is jumping into the market with more diverse contents based on powerful functions" said an official from LG.

The source at LG preferred to remain anonymous but also divulged that the tablet would be launching early in 2011. If this is true then it would suggest Gingerbread will only be around briefly before its usurped by Honeycomb.

It seemed that LG might be shooting itself in the foot by delaying the launch of its tablet even further, given the amount of new tablets that are springing up daily, but with a large screen and dual-core processor this looks like it will be one worth waiting for. Until then, LG fans have the just released Optimus smartphone to keep them occupied. The tablet will also come under the Optimus branding.
