Before there was Android, there was MontaVista, the first Linux distribution to get widespread acceptance on mobile phones. That may have been in the days when Linux was an invisible operating system embedded in low end handsets - certainly not a full blown software 'platform' - but nevertheless, MontaVista had a significant influence in proving that Linux was actually viable on mobile systems. Now the firm has been acquired by Cavium, maker of carrier grade network processors, for $50m in cash and stock, in a move that means both major embedded Linux players will be owned by semiconductor firms (Intel acquired Wind River earlier this year).
