French cellco and ISP SFR, part owned by Vivendi with the rest owned by Vodafone, has really thought through its Quad play and come up with an impressive home gateway called the Neufbox Evolution. It offers a local femtocell built into broadband and IPTV set-top box functionality.
The Evolution offer in-home connectivity uses WiFi at 300 Mbps and the femtocell can connect up to five mobile phones.
The IPTV set-top box offers a 3D menu which gives access to services over the web as well as a QoS controlled multicast. It supports 150 basic channels plus a la carte additions. It has internet access to the TF1 catch-up TV service and also to M6 Replay for an extra payment. These are the equivalent of the UK’s BBC iPlayer and ITV Player in France.
There is a VoD subscription service, a movie service for €10, a kids programming option for €6. M6 Replay costs €6 too.
SFR will use the same UI that it has used on its smart phones for content and the set top is 3D ready though there are no 3D services on it as yet.
The Evolution allows access to content sitting on PCs, on USB sticks external hard drives and network-attached storage or UPnP plug and play devices.
Because in France there is a copyright levy for all devices which store digital media, the set top only allows 40 GB freely available to the user and each month the user has to buy any more blocks that they use for €15 per month for 80 GB, all the way up to 250 GB.
The Evolution is modular and comes in different formats, at €29.90 a month for triple play with no DVR function and €34.90 with DVR on ADSL, and slightly more on fiber connections.
This set top is also understood to been designed by Wyplay the same company that provided the set top for Vodafone Spain recently.
